The Maine Illustrators’ Collective takes on the Classics; from Jane Eyre to Alice in Wonderland!

Many of the participating MEIC illustrators are well-known professional illustrators with careers spanning several decades of professional work in print; including children's books, newspapers and magazines. These beautiful interpretations of ageless classic books, in colorful styles that range from painterly to contemporary will be on display and for sale in original and print form at the Freeport Community Library throughout November.

The Maine Illustrators' Collective (MEIC) is a non-profit collective of professional illustrators and designers meeting in Portland to brain storm, critique new work, give support, share ideas, and offer advice on promoting each other's work. The Freeport Community Library welcomes everyone - occasional visitor and devoted member alike - to our lovely, modern facilities. The library is very pleased to provide a broad range of services to the individuals who make up our diverse clientele. From wireless internet access to storytime for toddlers, monthly artist exhibits to inter-library loans, Freeport history and genealogy research to a documentary film festival.

Directions:
Travelling north or south on I 295 take Exit 22. If you are coming from the north bear right onto Mallet Drive, from the south turn left at the stop sign onto Mallet Drive. Continue to the Route 1/Main Street stop light and turn left. Library Drive is the second street on your left.

An art exhibition titled “The MEIC's Spooky Art Show” organized by The Maine Illustrators Collective will be on display at Kennebooks, a new bookstore located in Kennebunk's Lower Village from 5pm October 2nd through Oct 31st. The Maine Illustrators' Collective (MEIC) is a 4 year old non-profit collective of professional illustrators and designers meeting in Portland once a month to brain storm, critique new work, give support, share ideas, and offer advice on promoting each other's work. They also organize events, talks and shows.
The Spooky Art Show will feature paintings and original art based on classic horror novels, scary short stories and poems, and even local folklore. All participating MEIC artists are published or printed illustrators with several of the participating book illustrators having award-winning books.
Kennebooks and The MEIC will be hosting an open “Halloween” costume reception with “scary food” on Friday, Oct 2nd from 5 p.m. to 7:00 pm; the public is invited to attend. Costumes are encouraged with prizes to be given to the scariest and the most creative! Pumpkin carving demonstrations will be held on the bookstore's outdoor patio weather permitting.
Come see this frightful display, meet the dreadfully creative talent, and partake of spooky food while being serenaded by haunting melodies.
Art and prints will be available for purchase through the individual artists.

WORKING ARTISTS SHOW

The WORKING ARTISTS SHOW, organized by the Maine Illustrators' Collective, will be featuring art by many nationally known and internationally published artists at Kennebunk Free Library in Hank's Room, a gallery space, in Kennebunk, ME.
Show runs July 2nd-July 31st
Artist's Reception is July 8th 4:30-7:30pm The public is welcome.
This show, featuring professional, commercial artists was created to promote public awareness of an art form usually seen for a few fleeting moments in print or film. Most consumers are unaware of the background behind producing commercial art: the time, thought, and skill. Advertising art, design, and illustration, once considered less than fine art, is now highly collectible in print and original form, with some of the best commercial artists' work, such as Andy Warhol's, Norman Rockwell's, and N. C. Wyeth's, being in art museum collections around the world.
Commercial artists are disciplined and highly skilled artists doing the business of art; producing their contracted art while accommodating their own family's needs, dealing with tight budgets, constantly creating “new” and inspired work, learning new skills as digital demands and software continue to change, negotiating with clients, all the while meeting often impossible deadlines.
These " invisible artists" rarely, if ever, show their imaginative illustrations or beautiful design work in original form to the public. Hidden by the limitations of reproduction the many tiny pen, pencil, and pastel strokes, brushwork, beautiful color blends on acid-free papers and boards are usually “hidden” away in flat files right after being scanned and printed.
